Family time

_MCD0060

Hello to all my new followers. It is so lovely to see new faces both here and on my Facebook page. I am still very much on a hiatus while we continue to discover our new normal with Type 1 Diabetes but my son needed some photos taken for his school project this week so I thought I would share them here and say – HI!

The last two weekends have been so necessary for me to save my sanity. We have been staying close to home and getting some order back in our lives. My family have officially declared this “no-junk-June”. We are focusing on decluttering our lives both materially (getting the kids and the grown ups to dump all clutter in our house) and other parts of our life – particularly our diet which has accumulated a lot of processed and pre-packaged food while learnt how to managed my daughters diabetes. Now we are on an insulin pump and have a bit more flexibility we can get back to eating good wholesome real food again…

I hope you are all enjoying the cool change that is blowing into Brisbane at the moment.  Please keep an eye on our Facebook page as I will be looking for some models in the next few weeks and also will be announcing some mini shoots that will be available in July.

I still do….

On Saturday the 24th of May I was blessed to be able to share a very special day with an amazing couple.  To celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary they renewed their vows surrounded by family and friends in the stunning grounds of The Laurals, Warwick, Queensland.

There were so many touching moments between this family. A gorgeous handwritten note by their daughter…

The ceremony took place as the winter sun was stinking down towards the horizon.  It was a beautiful family affair as the kids casually moved in and out and the couple recited their “thank you’s” to each other, as they acknowledged all those unique things that make married life the special adventure that it is.

Afterwards the three girls performed a song and dance to “Love is an Open Door” from the their favourite movie – Frozen which was absolutely delightful.

ANZAC Day

April 25th is an important day in Australia.  We call it ANZAC day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps).  Trying to explain what ANZAC day is about is difficult.  Although it is held on the anniversary of the landing of Gallipoli, it does not celebrate that battle as it was a disastrous loss with thousands of young men dying on the beach. It was not to mark the first time Australia entered into war, as we have fought in battles before. ANZAC day commemorates the Australian spirit, bravery, mateship, that quirky Australian sense of humour, of never giving up even when the odds are against you.  And now 99 years after that fateful landing ANZAC day celebrations are gaining in popularity as more and more Australians gather together to show our respect for all our service men and women and to acknowledge the intangible ANZAC spirit that lives on in our country today.

The time of your life

When I was younger and people used to tell me that this (insert age) was the time of my life. Although it often didn’t feel like it at the time.  However now in my 30’s I do, reluctantly admit they were correct.  And I wish I had more photos of myself from these times in my life.

Thats what our “Time of Your Life” shoots are all about.  Designed for young people, particularly at pivotal moments in their life (end of primary school, end of high school, beginning or end of university- or really any time you feel ready).

I had the beautiful Alyssa come and help me out with the first of these concept shoots on Wednesday, after our first shoot was rained out.  She was an absolute joy to work with and a fantastic model.

Down by the river

My homework assignment this week inspired me to attempt something I have always wanted to try and my gorgeous model Katie brought the whole scene to life.  After some scouting around I finally found the right location at Cedar Creek in Samford.  Katie answered a model call-out on our Facebook page and travelled all the way from Toowoomba and even with some trouble finding the place she was an absolute delight to work with! Thank you for your generous donation of time Katie and I hope you enjoy your photos.

Natalie and Brant

I was given the opportunity to photograph the most beautiful couple this weekend down at Shorncliffe.  About to welcome their first child into the world I’m sure you will agree they are both just glowing.  Wishing you both all the best with your new bub

Chasing the light

During my enforced break from professional photography I am undertaking a 6 month mentoring course with Ainslie from Wild Spirit Photography on the Gold Coast. This weeks assignment was to capture some beautiful light. These are a few of my images and thanks so much to my lovely models.

Thank you to all my clients

Welcome to 2014! I just wanted to take this time to thank all of my followers and clients who have supported me in this new photography venture as I move out of the realm of enthusiast to professional.  Although I am not taking new clients at the moment this year is going to be exciting.  I am undertaking a mentorship with a prominent Brisbane photographer and I am looking forward to learning and growing my photographic skills in the new year.

I hope you enjoy this video of my clients from 2013.

Happy New Year!

16

I’m not one that makes new Years Resolutions.  I think I did once when I was younger but I quickly realised waking up into a new calendar year really felt no different to waking up any other time of the year and so the novelty wore off pretty quickly.

Which is why it caught me kind of off guard tonight, or rather this morning, as its currently 1am. This funny sinking feeling that wormed its way through me some time after midnight. As always I went and kissed my kids Happy New Year – they aren’t the partying type.  My son, bless his heart, smiled at me and went to sleep and as always, my daughter who always insists she wants to wake up for the party at midnight is unrousable – she is a very heavy sleeper.  SO I decided I might as well do her finger-prick test now and get some sleep (for those who haven’t been following she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a month ago). I went through the routine that is now automatic. That was when I felt it start. I checked her numbers, 8.1 – I would like them to be a little higher so I could get a few more hours sleep, so  resign myself to getting up again in 4 hrs to check again. There it is. sitting there in the pit of my stomach – seeping its way through the rest of my body.

I don’t know what I was expecting, like this New Year would somehow be different to every other New Year. Perhaps this one was special. Perhaps this one really would be a fresh start and all the bad things would disappear. But sadly, life isn’t a Disney movie and I think tonight I realised this was the first New Years of forever with diabetes…

But there is one thing that I have always said when people ask me about my New Years resolutions; I don’t need a New Year to start afresh – each day comes with the promise of new beginnings and new opportunities. So while the reality may have hit hard today that I won’t have a day without diabetes hanging over my little girls head in the near future there is always hope for a cure. And if not a cure then we will just have to continue pursuing every day with the promise of new beginnings and new opportunities
